11 Iraqi Soilders Executed by Army of Ansar Alsunnah >>
The Ansar al-Sunnah Army said it had beheaded one and shot the 10 others. The group had announced on Tuesday that it captured the 11 Iraqi National Guardsmen on the highway between Baghdad and Hillah. "After investigating with them and (hearing) their confessions, it turned out this group was responsible for guarding the Crusader American troops in Radwaniya area and what's around it in southern Baghdad," a statement posted on the web site said.
Beheadings
The cutting of heads (in Arabic, qata al-raas) has been the favorite form of Islamist execution for more than 14 centuries.
In the famous battles of early Islam, with the Prophet personally in command of the army of believers, the heads of enemy generals and soldiers were often cut off and put on sticks to be shown around villages and towns as a warning to potential adversaries.
Chopping off heads was widely practiced throughout the Afghan wars of the 1980s. An estimated 3,000 Soviet soldiers, many of them Muslims, had their heads cut off by the Mujahedeen, who at the time enjoyed U.S. and other Western support.
Questions surrounding Nick Berg
The current spate of beaheadings started with the murder of Nick Berg, a 26-year-old American businessman. Though it was attributed to a group of Islamist terrorists in Iraq, new articles and findings point towards US intelligence behind the murder. The amaturely edited video clearly shows an already dead Berg being beheaded.
