Cyprus , officially the Republic of Cyprus , is a Eurasian island nation in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea south of the Anatolian peninsula (Asia Minor) or modern-day Turkey. The third largest island in the Mediterranean, it is currently divided into four main portions: the southern Republic of Cyprus (the island nation-state), the unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (illegally occupied by the Turkish army since 1974), the United Nations-controlled Green Line separating the two, and two British Base Areas. The Republic of Cyprus has been a member state of the European Union since 1 May 2004.

After independence Cyprus became a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement despite all three guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey and the UK) being North Atlantic Treaty Organization members. Cyprus left the Non-Aligned Movement in 2004 to join the European Union, though it retains special observer status.
